Federal Agents Search Ilhan Omar’s D.C. Home a Month After Homan Confirmed a Criminal Probe

Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home in the Washington, D.C., area on Monday, Oct. 12, executing a court-approved search warrant as part of what the Justice Department called an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The search, carried out by Homeland Security Investigations, comes less than a month after border czar Tom Homan said publicly that the Minnesota Democrat was the subject of a criminal probe.

No charges have been announced, and the Justice Department did not name Omar in its statement. But the agency that carried out the search, and what officials have said in recent weeks, point squarely at the question that has dogged Omar for years: her family’s immigration history.

What happened Monday morning

According to Fox News, as reported by AFP, the search began around 6 a.m., and several agents were seen outside the residence wearing HSI jackets. Agents were later photographed carrying boxes from the home.

A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed the operation: “Today in the Washington, D.C, area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” The department gave no further details.

Homan confirmed that a judge had approved the warrant. “I can confirm that a search warrant was executed this morning, signed by a judge,” he said, according to ABC News. “Department of Justice is leading the investigation along with Department of Homeland Security.” He added: “I won’t get into the specifics of the criminal investigation.”

Congress is not in session, and it was not clear whether Omar was at the residence during the search.

What the investigation reportedly concerns

The Justice Department has not said what it is investigating. Sources told ABC News the probe relates to Omar’s immigration paperwork. Reuters, citing a person familiar with the investigation, reported it relates to alleged immigration fraud, and that part of it concerns paperwork her late father filled out when she was a child. Omar came to the United States as a refugee and became a citizen in 2000, at age 17.

That puts Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of U.S. immigration enforcement, in the lead role, alongside the Justice Department. HSI is part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency Omar has spent years attacking.

Homan warned in September

This did not come out of nowhere. On Sept. 13, appearing on Fox News’s “The Sunday Briefing,” Homan confirmed that DHS was looking into allegations involving Omar. “I know things are going on, but I can’t give specifics of what’s happening,” he said. He spoke of possible immigration or marriage fraud, said no one is above the law, and noted that people who lie to obtain citizenship can face denaturalization.

Homan’s comments followed remarks on a podcast by DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who claimed Omar “married her brother to try to bring him to the United States.” That allegation has circulated among Omar’s critics for years. It has not been proven in public records, and Omar has repeatedly denied it, calling such claims “bigoted lies.” Vice President JD Vance said in May that the Justice Department was looking into the matter.

Days after Homan spoke, Omar told Fox News Digital that DHS had not contacted her. Asked whether the department had reached out about any investigation, she said: “No, they have not.” She also brushed the matter off: “The right wing has always had this s— going, so I don’t really worry about it.”

On Monday, a judge-approved warrant reached her front door.

Omar and Democrats cry “weaponization”

Omar called the search “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” She added: “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.” Her office said the “Congresswoman has done nothing wrong.”

Democratic leaders lined up behind her. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the search “deeply disturbing.” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said, “President Trump is abusing his power to go after political opponents weeks before an election.” The search came about three weeks before the midterms, in which Omar is seeking a fifth term.

President Trump said he had no role. “I have nothing to do with it,” he said, while adding that he has “always found her to be totally crooked, personally.”

The irony is hard to miss

Omar is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and she has not been charged with anything. But the process here is the one Americans are told to trust: investigators gathered enough to persuade a federal judge that there was probable cause, the Justice Department secured a warrant, and agents executed it.

That is a far cry from the picture Omar has painted for years, in which immigration agents are a rogue force terrorizing families. This time the warrant was signed, the agency was named on the record, and the investigation was flagged publicly a month in advance. Whatever investigators find, this was not a midnight ambush; it was the law working the way it is supposed to.

Ilhan Omar spent years calling immigration enforcement the villain, and now a federal judge has signed a warrant for her own front door.
