Mullin to the Migrant Caravan: ‘Zero Chance’ of Getting In, With the Coast Guard Ready

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has a message for the migrant caravan now moving north through southern Mexico: don’t bother. “The caravan has zero chance of coming into our country,” Mullin said in a Newsmax interview, a clip of which the Department of Homeland Security circulated on Sept. 28, 2026, adding that the department is ready to bring the Department of War and the Coast Guard to bear if the group keeps coming.

It is the clearest sign yet of how much the politics of the border have changed. Not long ago, a caravan was the start of a crisis on American soil. This one, by Mullin’s account, is Mexico’s problem.

The caravan

The group calls itself “Fe y Esperanza,” Faith and Hope. It set out from San Pedro Sula, in northern Honduras, on Sunday, Sept. 20, leaving in small groups for the Corinto crossing into Guatemala. Guatemalan broadcaster Emisoras Unidas reported estimates of it at 200 to 400 people at the start.

It grew as it went. The Epoch Times, citing the Mexican outlet Oaxaca Capital, put it at about 300 people after it crossed into Mexico by way of a bridge in Suchiate and walked more than 12 hours to Tapachula. Breitbart Texas reported that it grew to nearly 600 after entering Chiapas, with travelers from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Haiti. According to The Gateway Pundit, it then left Tapachula’s Bicentennial Park on a Sunday night in the rain, heading up the coastal highway, still more than 900 miles from the nearest Texas crossing.

Breitbart reported that, according to Diario de Chiapas, most of the Honduran migrants had recently been deported from the United States. As the group set out, the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa posted a warning on social media, without naming the caravan: “Las fronteras de Estados Unidos están cerradas para quienes violan la ley,” or “The borders of the United States are closed to those who break the law.” It added that anyone who tries to enter illegally will be deported.

What Mullin said

Mullin opened with the record. “We have the most secure border in the nation, and we’re going to keep it that way,” he said. “President Trump has made that very clear.” He claimed the administration has “let zero people in” in 16 months, and said, “we’re not going to let this caravan in.”

He said Washington has been coordinating with Mexico. “I’ve been talking with the Mexican government. We actually have been watching this caravan for quite some time. They’re also participating in helping to start to break this caravan up.” His explanation for Mexico’s cooperation was blunt: “They understand that they’re going to have a crisis on their border, not our border, because they’re not entering.”

Then he laid out the resources. “We will flex with DOW. We’ll flex with assets we have in DHS. We’ll put the Coast Guard down there.” DOW is the Department of War, the name the administration now uses for the Pentagon. Mullin also pointed to ongoing construction along the border: “Every time we build a mile, we secure a mile, and we’re going to continue to do that.”

And he spoke directly to the people walking north. “There’s zero, zero possibility you’re going to get in here, like the Biden administration, and claim asylum with those magic words,” he said.

Why the old playbook no longer works

That last line is the heart of it. For years, the selling point of a caravan was simple: get to the border, say the word asylum, and wait for a release. Smugglers sold that promise, and caravans were the advertisement. A DHS spokesperson told The Epoch Times that “the days of ‘catch and release’ are over, and Biden’s disastrous open border policy has been SEALED SHUT.”

DHS has also told reporters that anyone attempting to enter illegally “will be apprehended, prosecuted, and removed from the country,” according to The Gateway Pundit’s account of the agency’s statements, and the department told Fox News that Border Patrol is actively tracking the group and is closely engaged with international partners. A DHS source told Breitbart Texas the department is “prepared to deal with 600,” but that “the odds of seeing them reach the border are highly unlikely.” The same source said the group would likely be broken up before leaving southern Mexico, as other caravans have been this year.

That has been the pattern. A caravan nicknamed “Genesis” formed in March and was dissolved by Mexico’s National Institute of Migration in early April, Breitbart reported, and an April caravan marched more than 90 miles before returning to Tapachula. Breitbart also reported that many recent caravan members say they now hope to reach Mexico City or northern Mexican cities, not the United States, a remarkable shift in itself.

A DHS source put the contrast in numbers: four years ago, more than 10,000 migrants were reaching the border every day, Breitbart reported. This entire caravan is a fraction of a single day from that era.

The stakes

None of this means the caravan will simply vanish. People who have walked hundreds of miles from Honduras are often desperate, and smugglers have every incentive to keep selling the trip. But the incentives that once made a caravan worth the risk have been taken off the table. There is no release at the end of the road, no years-long wait inside the country, and no friendly signal from Washington.

That is what deterrence looks like. It is not cruelty; it is the same message the U.S. Embassy posted in Spanish as the group set out. Don’t risk your life, and don’t believe the traffickers.

The caravan can keep walking, but for the first time in years, the people who planned it know exactly where the road ends.
