Blanche Calls Democrats’ Armed Poll Agents Claim ‘Completely False’: Monitors Go to Every State

Attorney General Todd Blanche on Sunday flatly rejected the Democratic claim that armed federal agents will be stationed at polling places this November, calling it “completely false.” Appearing on Fox News Sunday on Oct. 4, Blanche said the Justice Department’s election monitors will do exactly what monitors have done for decades, and he told the lawmakers spreading the claim to stop.

“I wish that the senators and the congressmen that are saying these fearmongering, false statements would just not do that,” Blanche said. “It’s not fair to the American people.”

Where the “armed agents” line came from

The claim Blanche was answering has been a Democratic talking point since June. On June 18, Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin joined Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and other Democrats in introducing the Protect Our Polls Act, which would require Congress to approve any deployment of troops or federal law enforcement to election sites. In announcing it, Baldwin said the president “openly weighs sending in armed federal agents to our schools, churches, fire stations, and other polling locations.”

Read that sentence carefully. It does not say anyone has been ordered to a polling place. It says the president “weighs” it. That is the kind of phrasing designed to frighten voters without asserting a fact anyone can check.

On Sunday, Fox News Sunday read Baldwin’s statement on air and asked who the monitors would be and how Blanche answers critics who call the plan intimidation. Host Shannon Bream then put the question to him directly: true or false? His answer: “Completely false. They’re going to be election monitors as they are every single time.”

A thousand monitors, every state

The plan Democrats are describing as intimidation was announced in August by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who heads the department’s Civil Rights Division. She told Bloomberg the department intends to send about 1,000 monitors to watch voting in the midterms.

Blanche said on Sunday the department hopes to have “a thousand or more,” and that the deployment will not be aimed at one party’s turf. “They are not going to Republican states. They’re not going to Democrat states,” he said. “They’re going to every state to make sure that our elections are carried out legally, fairly, and appropriately.”

He also gave a short history lesson. “Since the 60s, the Department of Justice has monitored elections. Every single election has been monitored,” he said, adding that President Trump is doing “the same thing that every single administration has done” for generations. Election monitoring grew out of the civil rights era and the Voting Rights Act, which bars discrimination against voters and protects them from intimidation at the polls.

The monitors themselves are not a SWAT team. According to CBS News, they have historically been Civil Rights Division attorneys and staff, with help from U.S. Attorney’s Offices, and this year the department is recruiting volunteers from its own employees. According to the Justice Department, the monitors’ role is to observe and follow up on any investigations, not to intervene, the Washington Examiner reported in August.

The Biden precedent nobody mentions

Here is the part the “armed agents” crowd leaves out. In the 2024 presidential election, under the Biden administration, a Justice Department official told CBS News the department sent 714 people to monitor compliance with federal voting laws in 86 jurisdictions across 27 states. In the 2022 midterms, it sent 289.

Nobody in Baldwin’s caucus introduced emergency legislation over those monitors. Nobody warned that federal personnel would be lurking outside churches. The only thing that has changed is the size of the effort and the party of the president running it. Going from 714 to roughly 1,000 is an expansion, and the Washington Examiner notes it would be a record. It is not a new kind of operation.

On the separate question of immigration agents, administration officials have been just as clear. Border czar Tom Homan said in September there were no plans to send ICE to polling sites, according to the Washington Examiner, and the president said he had not thought about deploying ICE in the November elections.

What this fight is really about

There is a reasonable debate to be had about how many monitors are enough and where they should go. Dhillon has said the monitors will watch for issues such as barriers to voting for people with disabilities, as well as cases of suspected election fraud. That second focus is what seems to worry Democrats most.

But that is not the argument Democrats chose to make. They chose to tell voters that armed agents may be waiting at their children’s schools and their churches, a claim the nation’s top law enforcement officer now says is false. Telling people the polls might be dangerous is its own form of voter intimidation, and it comes from the side claiming to fight it.

The Justice Department’s job is to enforce federal voting law in every state. Monitors are observers. They take notes. They report problems. If an election is run cleanly, they have nothing to report.

An honest election has nothing to fear from a referee, and the people screaming loudest about the referee should explain why they are so worried.
