The Israel Defense Forces said on October 8, 2026, that it had killed Ibrahim Alam, a commander in Hamas’s military wing who, according to the military, crossed into Israel on October 7, 2023, took part in the murder of Israeli civilians and helped carry the body of 19-year-old Sgt. Shaked Dahan into Gaza. Alam was killed in an Israeli strike in the Khan Younis area on Monday, October 5, the IDF said.
The announcement came one day after Israel marked three years since the October 7 massacre. The timing was not lost on anyone who has followed how patiently Israel has worked through the list of men who planned and carried out that attack.
What the IDF says Alam did
In its statement, the IDF described Alam as a commander “who infiltrated Israel during the October 7 Massacre and took part in the murder of numerous Israeli civilians and in the abduction of Sergeant Shaked Dahan’s body to Hamas captivity.”
The military also announced a second strike. On Tuesday, October 6, it said, it killed Mu’tasem Muhammad Suleiman Salah, a Hamas military-wing operative. According to the Times of Israel, the IDF said the two men had “advanced plans for attacks against IDF troops and Israeli civilians and worked to rebuild Hamas’s capabilities,” and that they were targeted “to remove the threat.” JFeed reported that the IDF said Salah had been working to restore Hamas’s capabilities in violation of the ceasefire, and that both men were killed in aerial strikes using precise munitions, with steps taken to reduce harm to civilians.
The published reports did not include a response from Hamas, and the IDF’s description of Alam’s role has not been independently confirmed.
Who Shaked Dahan was
Shaked Dahan was 19 years old, from the northern city of Afula. He served as a tank driver in the 77th Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade. On the morning of October 7, his tank crew was fighting near the Gaza border when, as the Times of Israel reported, the tank was hit with RPG fire and explosive devices. Dahan was killed by Hamas terrorists, and his body was dragged into Gaza.
He was not alone. His tank, known as Tank 3, was carrying Capt. Omer Neutra, Staff Sgt. Oz Daniel and Sgt. Nimrod Cohen. Hamas abducted all three. Neutra and Daniel were later confirmed dead, and their bodies were returned under the ceasefire agreement in late 2025. Cohen was taken alive and was freed in October 2025.
For weeks, the Dahan family did not know whether Shaked was alive. The IDF declared him dead on November 28, 2023, after more than six weeks in which he was considered a hostage. Even then, there was no body to bury. His mother, Sigalit Gal, said she would not sit the traditional seven days of mourning until her son came home. In August 2024, IDF troops recovered his remains from Gaza, and he was finally buried in Israel.
His brother Tomer told Army Radio that Shaked’s lifelong dream was to defend Israel: “Shaked was a special kid, a guy whose one wish was to be a fighter in the Israel Defense Forces, no matter where.” His father, Shimon, said of him: “You were straightforward, anchored, honest, loved mankind, a noble soul.”
A pattern, not a one-off
Alam’s killing is the latest in a series of strikes on October 7 participants who are still in Gaza a year into the ceasefire. In September, the IDF announced it had killed Jihad Samih Mahmoud Ismail, a Nukhba squad commander in Khan Younis who, the military said, took part in the battle against the same Tank 3 crew on October 7 and later planned attacks on troops and civilians during the ceasefire. Ynet reported that in the same period the IDF also killed Nayal Abu Obeid of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade and Ahmad Batash of the Jabalia Battalion.
The message from Israel is consistent. The ceasefire that brought the hostages home did not grant amnesty to the men who took them. Where the IDF says a Hamas operative is planning new attacks or rebuilding the group’s capabilities, it acts. Where that operative also took part in October 7, the military makes sure the country knows his name and what he did.
Why it matters
October 7 was not only a massacre. It was a hostage operation designed to turn living people, and the bodies of the dead, into bargaining chips. Hamas dragged a 19-year-old soldier’s body across the border so it could trade on his family’s grief. For nearly ten months, Shaked Dahan’s parents could not bury their son.
Three years later, the men who did that are still being found. That is not vengeance. It is what a country owes its soldiers and their families: that the people who brutalized them do not get to rebuild and try again.
Hamas thought it could hide behind a ceasefire and the passage of time, and Israel just proved that three years is not long enough to be forgotten.
